Following the United States, France, and the European Union, other countries from Europe to the Arab world and Africa have condemned the terrorist attack on Smara on May 5, 2026, in a sequence where calls for a ceasefire are accompanied by more explicit support for Morocco's autonomy plan than ever before.

As we wrote yesterday, the United States, France, and the European Union (EU) were quick to condemn the cowardly terrorist attack by the separatist Polisario movement.

But they are not alone.

In the same vein, an increasing number of countries are following suit and choosing to speak out, in a broad international movement that eloquently reflects the consensus that is consolidating at the global level in favor of Morocco and its national cause.

On the list, we find other EU countries that, like France, have also wanted to express an individual position, Belgium, which, on October 23, 2025, had also finally joined Morocco's autonomy plan, the Czech Republic, and of course Spain, whose government, led by Pedro Sánchez, had taken the courage to break the glass ceiling of support for Rabat's initiative as early as March 2022.

But we can also mention the United Kingdom, another major power that, after years of wavering, had also chosen reason in June 2025.

At the regional level, the United Arab Emirates, faithful supporters of Morocco's territorial integrity since the outbreak of the Sahara affair in the mid-1970s, have had extremely strong words against the Polisario and its crime, described as a 'criminal act'.

As for Liberia, at the African level, its permanent representation in New York estimated that 'such violence undermines regional stability and threatens the progress made towards a peaceful resolution such as described in the autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty'.

Let us recall that the West African country had been one of the first to establish a consulate in the Sahara, as a recognition of Moroccan sovereignty, in March 2020 in Dakhla.

Below is a compilation of international reactions to the Polisario attack, hour by hour.

"The Belgian government condemns the recent attack on the city of Smara claimed by the Polisario Front, calls for respect of the ceasefire resolution 2797 (2025) of the Security Council, calls for good faith participation in the ongoing negotiation process, based on the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco to achieve a just, durable, and mutually acceptable settlement of the dispute, in accordance with the United Nations Charter."

"The United Kingdom condemns the Polisario attacks of May 5, which risk undermining efforts towards peace.

We support the efforts of the UN and the United States to resolve the Western Sahara conflict, in accordance with Security Council resolution 2797 of the United Nations.

We encourage all parties to engage in a spirit of compromise to achieve a durable resolution."

"The United Arab Emirates strongly condemned the terrorist attack targeting the Moroccan city of Smara and causing a wounded person.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the UAE expresses its strongest denunciation of these criminal acts and its constant rejection of all forms of violence, extremism, and terrorism aimed at undermining security and stability.

The Ministry also reaffirmed the UAE's constant position, based on its solidarity and total support for the Kingdom of Morocco, as well as its legitimate sovereign rights over the Moroccan Sahara.

It also reiterated its support for all that preserves the security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Kingdom, and contributes to the strengthening of peace and stability."
